Settling in

A quiet sort of working day today. We did decide that we must get curtains of some sort for the living room which has huge south-facing windows that warm up the place nicely in the winter, but the intensity of the direct sunlight makes it hard to work.

After an afternoon coffee we popped by a furniture maker in Cihangir to look into the possibility of getting some stuff made. It’s a nice shop, and I like the quality of their work, though I am a little nervous about cost as well as the final designs etc. They are going to send us quotes for the pieces we are interested in, and then we’ll see. We have some alternatives as well from other sources. But it’s all rather expensive and the state of the currency is making it quite hard. Very hard indeed for local manufacturers – the furniture guy tells us that many wholesalers are simply refusing to sell materials these days, especially if they are imported from elsewhere and bought for dollars.

On our return to the flat we discovered a rather dire issue – a leaking kitchen drain. This entailed a lot of mopping and drying, and I’ve put a bucket under it for now, but we will have to call the plumber back in to see what needs to be fixed, as it should not be leaking after two days of light use. Such are the miseries of home ownership – all evening I have been worrying that the kitchen cabinet will have to be replaced.
